ABOUT IN THE MOMENT COUNSELING:
Are you accepting new clients, and what is your availability?
Yes! Availability is by appointment only, and I will do my best to find a time to meet that best fits both of our schedules. Currently, I am in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
What is an initial phone consultation?
An initial phone consultation is a brief, up to 30 minute, phone conversation offered to all new potential clients to determine if we are a good fit. This allows you the opportunity to ask questions about the counseling process and to get a feel for how we might work together. It's important for you to feel comfortable as you engage in this vulnerable process and I want to ensure that I can meet your needs and provide you with the kind of support you are looking for. If we decide that it is a good fit after our consultation, we can set up our first appointment the following week.
If for any reason one of us decides we are not the best fit to work with one another, I am happy to offer referrals to other local mental health professionals.

What should I expect at my first visit?
In general, our initial visit is considered a time for your therapist to assess your past history, current problems or stressors and goals for treatment. This session entails us briefly reviewing the completed new client paperwork that you will complete prior to the visit and bring with you to session. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about the paperwork, or the therapeutic process in general. We will then take time to more fully discuss pertinent history, your presenting problem or need for treatment, and goals that you have for treatment. In order to best help you, I may want to know more about your upbringing, how long you have been experiencing the issues that lead you to seek treatment, past experiences in therapy, and other pertinent historical and current-day issues that you are facing. Based on your particular situation, this assessment and treatment planning may take up to several sessions.
My style is casual and warm, and my approach to psychotherapy is highly collaborative, meaning I want to ensure we take adequate time to build a trusting therapeutic relationship that will ensure we are meeting your particular needs and goals. You are welcome to ask questions at any point along the way. We will end the initial visit by discussing frequency of sessions and scheduling your next visit, if we both decide to move forward working with one another.

ABOUT PSYCHOTHERAPY:
Why do people seek therapy? Do I really need therapy? Is it right for me?
Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, and while you may have successfully navigated through other difficulties you've faced, there's nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it. In fact, therapy is for people who have enough self-awareness to realize they need a helping hand. You are taking responsibility by accepting where you're at in life and making a commitment to change the situation by seeking therapy. Therapy provides long-lasting benefits and support, giving you the tools you need to avoid triggers, re-direct ineffective or damaging patterns, and overcome whatever challenges you face.
People have many different motivations for coming to psychotherapy. Some may be going through a major life transition (grief and loss, unemployment, divorce, new job, etc.), or are not handling stressful circumstances well. Some people need assistance managing a range of other issues such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, addictions or relationship problems. Therapy can help provide some much needed encouragement and help with skills to get them through these periods. Others may be at a point where they are ready to learn more about themselves or want to be more effective with their goals in life. In short, people seeking psychotherapy are ready to meet the challenges in their lives and ready to make changes in their lives.
How can therapy benefit me?
A number of benefits are available from participating in therapy. Therapists can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress management, and body image issues. Many people also find that therapists can be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and the hassles of daily life. Therapists can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn. Some of the benefits available from therapy include:
What is therapy like?
Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, treatment will be different depending on the individual, and I strive to work collaboratively with you in helping you achieve your personal goals in the most useful way possible.
Generally speaking, the first few sessions will entail us spending time exploring your history, presenting problem or need for treatment, and relevant treatment goals. Subsequent sessions may involve us discussing the current events happening in your life, exploring progress or any new insights gained from the previous therapy session and problem solving on various strategies or coping skills that may help you achieve your specific goals. There may also be times where I provide education on various topics, teach practical skills that may be helpful to you or offer recommendations for homework that may help aid in the therapeutic process. Depending on your specific needs, therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with more difficult patterns or your desire for more personal development. Either way, it is most common to attend therapy on a regular basis, typically weekly or bi-weekly.
It is important to understand that you will get more results from therapy if you actively participate in the process. The ultimate purpose of therapy is to help you bring what you learn in session back into your life. Therefore, beyond the work you do in therapy sessions, your therapist may suggest some things you can do outside of therapy to support your process - such as reading a pertinent book, journaling on specific topics, noting particular behaviors or taking action on your goals. People seeking psychotherapy are typically ready to make positive changes in their lives, are open to new perspectives and take responsibility for their lives.
How often, and for how long, will I need therapy?
It is most common to be seen on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, based on your particular needs. Depending on what you are looking for, therapy can be brief, lasting only a few months, or can be longer, lasting a year or more. During our initial consultation and the first few sessions, we will determine together what may be best for you. As therapy progresses, we may always adjust the frequency with which we see each other. You have the right to terminate therapy at any time, and we will regularly assess your treatment progress and ongoing therapy needs along the way.
